The term “nutrient density” is thrown around a lot, but I find it to be frequently mis-used. For example, the most recent version of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans included an embarrassing infographic featuring vegetable oil as a supposed more nutrient-dense option to butter. Face palm.
.
If you actually analyze nutrient concentrations of foods to identify the most nutrient-dense options, as a recent study did, you’ll get a more accurate picture of what I mean when I use the term nutrient density.
.
This study (featured in an earlier research brief) assessed foods highest in vitamin A, folate, vitamin B12, calcium, iron, and zinc while comparing these foods against the micronutrient needs of various populations, including women of reproductive age.
.
They identified the following foods with very high micronutrient density: organs (like liver and heart), small dried fish, dark green leafy vegetables, bivalve shellfish (clams, mussels, and oysters), crustaceans, goat, beef, eggs, milk, canned fish with bones, lamb/mutton, and cheese.
.
You might notice that every food on this list, minus dark green leafy vegetables, is some form of animal food. These are, and always have been, the most concentrated sources of nutrients.
.
You’ll also notice a lot of overlap between this list and the foods I highlight in chapter 3 of Real Food for Pregnancy. After all, my approach to prenatal nutrition is about leading with micronutrients, as these are often not emphasized enough during this crucial phase of life.
.
Don't get confused about the term nutrient density. None of the examples offered on the 1st picture are actually nutrient dense. Some are marginally less problematic than the alternative (non-sugary cereal is better than sugary cereal, of course), while others are flat out wrong (cough, cough, *vegetable oil*).

Are you confused by all of these medicine terms? You are not alone. Let me help break them down for you!

❓Complementary Medicine:
- When natural medicines are used in combination with conventional medicine. The natural medicines are thus complimenting the conventional therapies.

❓Alternative Medicine:
- When natural medicines are used alone without the use of conventional medicines. This means it is an alternative to the standard practice of care.

❓Integrative Medicine:
-When both natural medicines and conventional medicines are used together along with taking into account a holistic perspective offering mind, body, spirit therapies as well.

❓Functional Medicine:
-When both natural medicines and conventional medicines are used together along with taking into account the function of the human body. Testing is often done to assess suboptimal functioning of body systems and medicines are recommended in order to bring the body back to normal/optimal function. The focus is more on body physiology then treating a specific disease.

❓Naturopathic Medicine:
-Hopefully, you are following me at this point because you can essentially say Naturopathic Medicine encompasses ALL OF THE ABOVE forms of medicine PLUS more! Naturopathic medicine uses an array of tools from natural medicines and conventional medicines, to lifestyle modifications, to get to the ROOT CAUSE of disease using both functional medicine labs along with standard medical labs. We don’t stop until we find the cause and cure!

These terms can get confusing and often times used interchangeably. Don’t get too stumbled over them. If you find yourself confused just bookmark (save) this post and refer back to it to help remind you of their subtle differences.
